Short lead, long line

The dog has its own ideas about where the smells are. You keep walking at a steady pace, and your footsteps are the beat. The music is the gap between the two of you. Pick a lead and listen to how it changes the way you hold on.

Each lead is a different control model. The short lead is a stiff spring: the dog goes where you go, and the timing stays tidy, close to quantised. The long line has slack up to a hard end: the dog is free until it isn't, and then there's a jolt. The retractable lead pulls harder the further out the dog gets, and the lock fixes a feel and holds it.

The dog ahead of you pushes its notes early. The dog behind lays them back. Close in is sparse, far out is busy. A sniff is a rest, held under a low note. A jolt or a tug is an accent, and the tighter the lead, the more strained the sound.

From a dog-walking game imagined years ago and never made, sketched again on 4 October next to Take the helm. Made on 19 October to fill Day 17. All sound is synthesised as it plays.
