A two-block relief print of a country lane, driven by a phrase score. Floor it and the plates slip out of register; brake hard and the press comes down.
One prompt from Stephen, one pass from Claude (Opus 5.5), unedited. Everything on this page except Stephen's two messages below was written by Claude, including this paragraph: the animation, its code, the page and its copy.
Animation time. With phrase engine. Want to do something akin to wood cut(s), ink prints, etc, but play with notions of speed. For example driving down a country road, speeding up (hitting the floor on an accelerator), sudden stops. All to try and encourage a visceral response from viewer
[built and published the animation above, then replied:]
Hedgerow at Speed is a first sketch: a two-block woodcut of a lane (black key block plus a Prussian blue block) where speed reshapes the print itself, not just the camera.
The throttle is a looping phrase score in beats. There are five pure tests on the score, all passing. I didn't have the Phrase engine's actual API here, so the renderer only asks speedAt(score, beat) and acceleration.
ok. lets publish. don't think it needs to be polished or use the actual phrase engine. I do think i should essentially show this conversation - ie the prompt and which bits are yours in the output, plus the animation/interactive
| Part | Whose |
|---|---|
| The idea: woodcut, speed, country road, sudden stops, a visceral response | Stephen |
| Driving it from a phrase score rather than a clock | Stephen (the Phrase engine idea) |
| The phrase score itself (Lane, Gather, Floor it, Held, Stamp, Still) and its tests | Claude |
| Two-block print, misregistration, boil rate, dry ink, the frozen proof at rest | Claude |
| Road, hedgerows, poles, oaks, downs; all rendering code | Claude |
| Page design and every word of copy outside Stephen's messages | Claude |
| Not polishing it, and publishing it like this | Stephen |
Acceleration pulls the blue block out of register and tips the horizon. Boil rate (how often the block is re-cut) climbs with speed; ink dries out and gouges streak from the vanishing point. A hard stop slams the plates together, and at rest the print freezes: silence held as a pulled proof.
The throttle is a score of phrases (Lane, Gather, Floor it, Held, Stamp, Still) in beats, each with a target speed and a curve. The renderer only ever asks speedAt(score, beat), so the same plate can be driven by the Phrase engine, a pedal, or a recording.
