Dawn Glass
From a photo I took through a rain-flecked car window as the sun came up. The fields slide past at speeds set by their distance. Each raindrop is a tiny upside-down lens, and each one sounds the colour it lands on. Tap the window to add a drop.
Sound
Focus
- Brightness
- Pitch. Dark hedge gives low notes, the glow and sky sit higher.
- Warmth
- Timbre. Amber light plays a soft FM (frequency-modulation) tone; blue-grey sky rings like a small bell.
- Drop size
- Loudness and ring time, shaped by a slow fourteen-second phrase so nothing stays level.
- Merging
- Two drops joining make a lower note that sags slightly in pitch.
- Sliding
- Heavy drops break loose in the airflow with a brief breathy smear.
- Dawn
- Rises on its own. Moves the scale from D minor pentatonic to D major pentatonic to D Lydian, and opens the pad.
- Focus
- Chooses which layer is soft, as with the camera, and which sits nearer in the mix.
The photo reduced to 16 × 12. Everything in the window is interpolated from these 192 colours.
